30 Days of Self Care: Day Twenty-Seven

30 Days of Self Care:  Day Twenty-Seven

Social Self Care

Social self care can be one of the most pleasing forms of self care for those who crave being with others. But as you will soon discover, it might not always be the case for someone who has a harder time finding and making new friends or staying in contact with those they care about. Relationships take time. It can be an ongoing effort to keep some people in your lives. Being proactive about connecting with others will show that you care about your relationships and prioritizing them within the rest of your life. It’s also important to be mindful of who you reach out to. Put time into relationships that recharge you, add value to your life, and leave you feeling fulfilled. But, being social does not have to be difficult. You can do regular activities such as grocery shopping or joining a group to get your social needs met. Now, with social media, we witness many interacting with others in more ways ever. Social self care allows us to feel like we belong. Enjoying the act of socializing, with real and meaningful conversations and activities, means that you are getting the quality time you need to build new friendships and foster old ones.

Remember:  We must serve ourselves first in order to go out and better serve the world.  Being in community means connecting with others on a social level, allowing yourself to grow deeper friendships with others and have your belonging needs met.

DAY TWENTY-SEVEN:  SOCIAL SELF CARE

Being in community, gathering together to support one another through fellowship and church, is how God's people are designed to be. Many as one. We belong together, to be social with one another, to support each other's businesses and livelihoods. We need one another. Being in a community is about doing something together that makes belonging matter. This is what it means to be in a genuine community – a feeling of belonging, of togetherness. Caring about the people in your community is important. It's more than just a group of people living in a particular area. A community is a group of people we lean on when times are tough; our friends, family, and neighbors who are there for us when we need love, support and encouragement. This commitment to your community is what pleases God most. He loves when we remain united. Today conduct yourself in a way that helps support your local community. Participate with the church. Clear up any miscommunications, support your local businesses, volunteer where you can be most helpful, and extend friendship to those who need you now. Be the hands and feet of Christ.

BIBLICAL VERSES FOR SOCIAL SELF CARE:
  • "Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you."--Colossians 3:12-13
  • "Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”--1 Corinthians 15:33
  • "A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends."--Proverbs 16:28
  • "How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!"--Psalm 133:1
  • "Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms."--1Peter 4:8-10

ACTION STEPS

Here are a few ways we can cover our social self care today:
  • Set up a coffee date with someone you would consider a new friend.
  • Call your neighbor just to let them know you wanted to see how they are doing.
  • Help someone who is elderly with any errands or tasks at their home.
  • Host family dinner with extended family. Come together in the kitchen for all to help.
  • Talk to a stranger in line. Be positive and light-hearted.
  • Go to the store and walk up & down the aisles if you need to be in the presence of others.
  • Join a bible study group from church. Call or go online to get connected.
  • Attend a MOPS (Moms of PreSchoolers) event if you have small kids.
  • Start a BUNCO group. Can be all women or couples. This dice game is loads of fun.
  • Utilize social media in a positive way by interacting with current discussions or interests.

Enjoy connecting with others to maintain your social self care.  Find a new friend or group to come together.  Volunteer at church or help others in your neighborhood.  All of these suggestions will enhance your sense of belonging and allow you to feel like you are contributing to society and your local community.
