30 Days of Self Care: Day Nineteen

30 Days of Self Care:  Day Nineteen

Sensory Self Care

Our lives can be so busy with a multitude of work and family obligations, as well as the need to care for others and do it well. Sometimes we just need to unplug. Give yourself a few moments of rest. Enjoy a minute of peace. Once we get that needed rest, we are recharged to take on what is next! Your own understanding of what self-care means to you will change and evolve as you learn more about yourself and your individual needs. At first, maybe it looks like simply not doing a behavior that is self destructive and avoiding unhealthy situations. Then it looks something like putting it into your regular schedule. In the long term, the goal is to understand your own needs on a deeper level—being ahead of the curve and learning what your mind and body need to be at its healthiest and happiest. You will then be able to go quickly to what you need without hesitating or having to consider what to do. You will already know! How exciting is that?! It's called self awareness. Learning to recognize your own needs and how to attend to them is truly paramount. Keep this up and soon you will be an expert at it and be able to teach others how to take care of themselves as well. Progress!

Remember:  We must serve ourselves first in order to go out and better serve the world.  Unplug, even for just a moment and watch your internal battery get quickly recharged.  Combine self care with things you enjoy with your senses and take delight in all the things you love.

DAY NINETEEN:  SENSORY SELF CARE

We pray. We pray a lot. We ask God to take care of our plight. We beg for His mercy to be poured out into our situation. We ask Him to consider us when looking to provide favor on his children. We plead for an outcome that would be considered positive and beneficial for completing our storyline. And then, it happens. God answers our prayers. In His timing, He provides a way out. He pours His love on us and turns our problems into possibilities. He increases our favor and then some. Have you taken a moment to worship and praise Him? Taste and see that the Lord is good. His promises are in the bible for all of us to read and place our trust in. We can rejoice in Him and sing loudly our praises for all to hear. Use your eyes to see, your lips to speak, your voice to sing and your ears to hear that the Lord God is awesome indeed. Today, may you show others how amazing God is and how He takes great care of you.

BIBLICAL VERSES FOR SENSORY SELF CARE:
  • “And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasing to the eye.” Gen 2:9
  • Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from Heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting."--Acts 2:2
  • "If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal."--1 Corinthians 13:1
  • "The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart..."--Genesis 8:21
  • "Come and see what God has done, his awesome deeds for mankind!"--Psalm 66:5

ACTION STEPS

Here are a few ways we can cover our sensory self care today:
  • Take in a live performance show or live theatre.
  • Go to an interactive art or science museum.
  • Get yourself to the ocean. Time for all your senses to be explored.
  • Walk through the botanical gardens and/or butterfly exhibit.
  • Spray your sheets with an aromatic scent you find most soothing.
  • Watch some sensory meridian response videos to help you relax and fall asleep.
  • Squeeze playdough.
  • For sensory overload, find a closet and stay in there for 5-10 minutes.
  • Buy yourself a Native American rain stick.
  • Pet an animal. Your pet, a friend's pet or go to a petting zoo.

Today, do something for your sensory self care.  Find an animal to pet, grab yourself some playdough or take a quick break away from the hustle and bustle.  Just remember, you are in charge of you.  Lead the way.

Have a blessed day, Kimala
