30 Days of Self Care: Day Six

30 Days of Self Care:  Day Six

Social Self Care

When we work on our social self care we are saying that it's time to plug in with other people. Even introverts need relationships, but on their terms. It's about maintaining healthy, true, supportive connections with others. While extroverts have no problem keeping up on social self care, the introverts need to really keep this going. Participating in social self care activities really helps us to invite diverse relationships into our circle; and not just with family, friends and co-workers.

Not only is interaction important, but actual physical contact is life saving! Family therapist Virginia Satir once said, “We need four hugs a day for survival. We need 8 hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” While that may sound like a lot of hugs, it seems that many hugs are better than not enough. Unfortunately, most people today — especially during COVID season are touch-deprived.

Many people live solitary or busy lives with reduced social interaction and touching. If you want to feel better about your self, reduce your stress, improve communication, and be happier and healthier, it seems that giving and asking for more hugs is a good place to start.

Remember:  We must serve ourselves first in order to go out and better serve the world.  Connect with other people and fulfill your social self care today.

DAY FIVE:  SOCIAL SELF CARE

Now, more than ever, our social connectedness is so important. These times are met with separation, division, chaos and much more. It is so important to make the effort to socially connect. For extroverts, it may not be as difficult. With introverts, well, maybe there needs to be more awareness of how and why efforts need to be made. We all need people in our lives. Social connectedness helps to improve our own self image, reduces stress levels, stimulates conversations, increases brain activities and enhances personal growth. The Lord wants us to be in fellowship with one another. He shows us how others can bring about care and love through their efforts to come alongside in times of advice or need. Don't let things get in the way of reaching out to people. God wants his children together, bringing happiness today.

BIBLICAL VERSES FOR SOCIAL SELF CARE:
  • "Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing."--1Thesalonians 5:11
  • "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor:"--Ecclesiastes 4:9
  • "If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up."--Ecclesiastes 4:10
  • "After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before."--Job 42:10
  • "Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of a friend springs from their heartfelt advice."--Proverbs 27:9

ACTION STEPS

Here are a few ways we can cover our social self care today:
  • Send a letter or postcard to someone far away.
  • Set up a date night with your spouse or partner.
  • Leave a funny voicemail with someone you care about.
  • Talk positively with someone who works in customer service.
  • Join a friend or family member while they run errands.
  • Call a trusted family member or friend and talk things out. They will be there for you.
  • Pass out hugs today!
  • Treat a co-worker to lunch.
  • Go out in public and be around other people. Engaging is optional!
  • Have a picnic with family or friends or both.

KIMALA'S  VIDEO ON SELF HUGGING :

Remember that today being social is important.  Make an effort to get among other people, whether it be in public or out to lunch with a co-worker or friend.  Make plans for this weekend to have company over or gather at a park or lake.  Whatever you do, bring laughter and some hugs with you.  We all need some of that!  And if you can't, it's okay, give yourself a hug.

Have a blessed day, Kimala
