The Ten Commandments: #9 Do Not Give False Testimony

 The Ten Commandments

#9 YOU SHALL NOT GIVE FALSE TESTIMONY AGAINST YOUR NEIGHBOR.
Do not lie. Don't make up a story to suit you or to cover your tracks. Do not believe that you can get away with anything of the sort. God knows and sees all. You cannot hide. When God says do not give a false witness against your neighbor it is because you should not be the one to tear down another person with a false story. Part of this includes sharing false news. It is so easy in today's world to not research the truth. Instead, we believe the lie or false narrative and then spread it like wild fire! Oh, the damage it causes! Then later, we find out that it wasn't true at all! Were you ever a part of this when sharing information over the internet or in person? By all accounts, we may even believe we were doing the right thing, but how destructive lies can be, ruining people's livelihoods, their relationships, careers, etc. God curses liars. In Proverbs chapter 6 the bible tells us that God despises a lying tongue, false witness and one who spreads lies in his community. Do not be that person.
VERSES

“You shall not bear a false report; do not join your hand with a wicked man to be a malicious witness. You shall not follow the masses in doing evil, nor shall you testify in a dispute so as to turn aside after a multitude in order to pervert justice;"--Exodus 23:1-2
You shall not swear falsely by My name, so as to profane the name of your God; I am the Lord."--Leviticus 19:12
"There are six things which the Lord hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil, A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers."--Proverbs 6:16-19
"You know the commandments, Jesus said ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’”--Luke 18:20
"Like a club and a sword and a sharp arrow, Is a man who bears false witness against his neighbor."--Proverbs 25:18
"Then he said to me, “This is the curse that is going forth over the face of the whole land; surely everyone who steals will be purged away according to the writing on one side, and everyone who swears will be purged away according to the writing on the other side. I will make it go forth,” declares the Lord of hosts, “and it will enter the house of the thief and the house of the one who swears falsely by My name; and it will spend the night within that house and consume it with its timber and stones.”--Zechariah 5:3-4
"For the ruthless will come to an end and the scorner will be finished, Indeed all who are intent on doing evil will be cut off; Who cause a person to be indicted by a word, And ensnare him who adjudicates at the gate, And defraud the one in the right with meaningless arguments."--Isaiah 29:20-21

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
