The Ten Commandments: #4 Keep the Sabbath Holy

 The Ten Commandments

#4 “REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY BY KEEPING IT HOLY. SIX DAYS YOU SHALL LABOR AND DO ALL YOUR WORK, BUT THE SEVENTH DAY IS A SABBATH TO THE LORD YOUR GOD. ON IT YOU SHALL NOT DO ANY WORK, NEITHER YOU, NOR YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER, NOR YOUR MALE OR FEMALE SERVANT, NOR YOUR ANIMALS, NOR ANY FOREIGNER RESIDING IN YOUR TOWNS. FOR IN SIX DAYS THE LORD MADE THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH, THE SEA, AND ALL THAT IS IN THEM, BUT HE RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY. THEREFORE THE LORD BLESSED THE SABBATH DAY AND MADE IT HOLY."--EXODUS 20:8-11
The Lord our God wants us to work for six days and rest on the seventh. You would think this would be a simple task, one that many would be very eager to uphold. Unfortunately, it is not. In our sweet little mountain town, there was a time when on Sundays everything was closed--all the shops, businesses and gas stations, etc. It was to observe the Sabbath. Such a time is no longer, as you drive through the main streets and witness the hustle and bustle of tourists and busy life. God wants us to dedicate one day a week to observe it as a day of resting and worshipping the Lord. It doesn't have to be exactly on Sunday. Your Sabbath could be another day indeed. In biblical times, people were in need of rest, both in ceasing from hard work (shabbat) and being present together with God (nuakh). Jesus ushered in the promise and reality of both. Jesus reminded the people of God’s actual intent for the Sabbath: unity with God, creation, and each other. When we observe the Sabbath, we are agreeing to God's pact he made with his people of the past, present and future to rest in his presence.
VERSES
"He said to them, “This is what the Lord commanded: ‘Tomorrow is to be a day of sabbath rest, a holy sabbath to the Lord. So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning.’”--Exodus 16:23
"There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a sabbath to the Lord."--Leviticus 23:3
"There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his."--Hebrews 4:9-10
"Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day."--Deuteronomy 5:15
"I am the Lord your God; follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. Keep my Sabbaths holy, that they may be a sign between us. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God."--Ezekiel 20:19-20

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
We are better together.
Have a blessed day, Kimala
