The Ten Commandments: #10 Do Not Covet

 The Ten Commandments

#10 "YOU SHALL NOT COVET YOUR NEIGHBOR’S HOUSE. YOU SHALL NOT COVET YOUR NEIGHBOR’S WIFE, OR HIS MALE OR FEMALE SERVANT, HIS OX OR DONKEY, OR ANYTHING THAT BELONGS TO YOUR NEIGHBOR.”

Let's unpack this. God does not want us to covet or lust after someone else's spouse or their house, car, belongings, career or anything else belonging to our neighbors or people we know. This produces envy, jealousy, greed and certainly lustful thoughts, when we strongly desire what others have and in turn, can lead to our own sinful behaviors and actions. It's truly a snare, ready to trap you into dissatisfaction with your life and what you have and don't have. It's a downhill slope to compare our spouses and belongings against what we perceive someone has that could be better (often not reality!) God wants us to be content. He wants us to live peacefully and satisfied. It does not mean we can't strive to achieve more or improve our lives. What God says though, is don't look sideways at what someone else has. Look up, look ahead and move forward, setting your own personal goals. God wants to bless you personally and will allow you to steward what He believes you can handle. It's a two way relationship: You and God. Not you, Him and them.

VERSES

"Now there's great gain in godliness with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, and we can't take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we'll be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It's through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs."— 1 Timothy 6:6-10

"For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.”--Mark 7:21-23
"He who oppresses the poor to make more for himself or who gives to the rich, will only come to poverty."--Proverbs 22:16

"Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,”--Hebrews 13:5

"It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do. An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money."--1Timothy 3:1-3

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
We are better together.
