The Ten Commandments: #2 No Idols

 The Ten Commandments

#2 YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FOR YOURSELF AN IMAGE IN THE FORM OF ANYTHING IN HEAVEN ABOVE OR ON THE EARTH BENEATH OR IN THE WATERS BELOW. YOU SHALL NOT BOW DOWN TO THEM OR WORSHIP THEM; FOR I, THE LORD YOUR GOD, AM A JEALOUS GOD, PUNISHING THE CHILDREN FOR THE SIN OF THE PARENTS TO THE THIRD AND FOURTH GENERATION OF THOSE WHO HATE ME, BUT SHOWING LOVE TO A THOUSAND GENERATIONS OF THOSE WHO LOVE ME AND KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS.
God makes no excuses about it--He declares himself to be a jealous God. He does not want us to be swayed by other things that could cause us to take our attention off of Him. He curses those who do and sets generational curses for years to come. Idolatry comes in many forms in today's society. From carved images to setting up altars or shrines, to obsessing over material items in our lives that we cannot seem to live without, these are considered distractions. When we block out of our time of being in devotion to the Lord because we would rather be doing something else, the question arises: "Is this an idol? Is it causing me to stumble?" God includes in idolatry the acts of drunkenness and sexual immorality. The acts of worshipping things with our flesh can create such a rift in our relationship with our Father. The second commandment is a warning and one that we need to be consciously aware of while living in a distracting world.
VERSES

"I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols."--Isaiah 42:8
"Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind,"--Colossians 2:18
"Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry."--Colossians 3:5
"For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry."--1Peter 4:3

This is the word of the Lord. Praise be to God.
We are better together.
Have a blessed day, Kimala
