Fruits of the Spirit: Gentlness
Fruits of the Spirit
DAY NINE: Gentleness
"Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."--Matthew 11:29
"With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,"--Ephesians 4:2
"Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted."--Galatians 6:1
Jesus Christ exemplified the discipline of gentleness in his actions. When He saw sin and transgression, He did not smear it in the faces of those to blame. Instead, He approached with such gentleness and a calming spirit, that those in His presence were touched by His character and open to His direction. The Savior moves toward us with tenderness and grace, when we know we deserve just the opposite from him. In the same, we are to interact in a manner of gentleness with others. There is an excellent book out by Daniel Ortlund called "Gentle and Lowly." Its message contains the balm for every heart that feels pierced by sin and sorrow.
DEFINITION
Gentleness is the quality of being kind, tender and mild-mannered. softness of action or effect; lightness.
Synonyms are compassion, mildness, clemency, forbearance, tenderness, kindness, forgiveness
In biblical terms, in order to be gentle, we must not view ourselves as better than someone else. Rather than asserting superiority, someone who is gentle wants to help others, even when they have been done wrong. An example of gentleness can be seen in John 8, when the Pharisees bring a woman who was caught in adultery to Jesus.
THE TASK TODAY: When you find yourself at a crossroads of needing to come alongside another to give advice or discipline, ask yourself what would Jesus do? How would He intervene in this moment? Come to the table with gentleness and kind words. It may not always be met with open arms, but the Holy Spirit will be with you and the words will continue to work on the one who listens. Prepare your heart in such a manner that you walk with humility and humbleness, not having an ounce of angst or be tempted to engage in sin against another, but only offer grace.
We are better together.
Have a blessed day, Kimala
