30 Days of Self Care: Day Twenty-Six

30 Days of Self Care:  Day Twenty-Six

Sensory Self Care

Sensory self care begins with you in mind. Utilizing your senses to enhance your view of yourself and the world around you, is crucial to our overall perception of who we are, what are our characteristics and traits unique to us and how we fit in the society we live in. For each of us, some senses are heightened more than others. You may enjoy things visibly seen with your eyes, while another may enjoy things they can physically touch. Put a group of people in one room with specific sights, sounds, smells and objects, and each will exit with different stories of what stood out for them while in the room. Allow yourself the gift of using your senses to provide self care in a way that you most enjoy. Be kind to yourself in the process. How you behave and interact with the things around you is special. Not everyone has your unique talents and abilities. Give yourself permission that when you need to unplug from life's way of creating stress for you, tap into your authentic self and explore the world around you with your senses. Do those  things that truly light you up and bring you the most joy. Love yourself so that you can give that love to others and so much more. Take good care because there is only one you!

Remember:  We must serve ourselves first in order to go out and better serve the world.  Loving ourselves begins with you.  Get comfortable in your own skin and be good to yourself. Then let others experience all that you have to offer.

DAY TWENTY-SIX:  SENSORY SELF CARE

How often do you compare yourself to others? Is there a person that you wish to be more like? Are there parts of you that perhaps you wish that were different? Can we shape-shift into another being with special super powers that can take on anything, ready for action?! We can fall so easily into the mindset that who we are and how we are, should somehow be different, giving us some sort of feeling that we are somehow lacking. Satan would love nothing more than for you to self-sabotage and self-doubt because you think somehow you are less than, incapable or worse. That kind of stinking-thinking gets us into trouble! God designed us specifically in such a way that only you are you. There are no two exact humans alike! Remember this: who you are and what you are capable of, is by no mistake. You were so beautifully made by your Creator that He made only one you. Begin today on a quest to love yourself. Let God know that you are pleased with His design. Praise Him for all that you are and trust that He designed you for special things that only you can do. You are assigned to Him and only you will carry out the tasks He created you for.

BIBLICAL VERSES FOR SENSEORY SELF CARE:
  • “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit;"--1 Peter 3:10
  • "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."--Psalm 139:14
  • "He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see?"--Psalm 94:9
  • "Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.”--John 20:27
  • "And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God."--Ephesians 5:2

ACTION STEPS

Here are a few ways we can cover our sensory self care today:
  • Style your hair differently. Use accessories, like hair clips or fancy pins if you like.
  • Buy yourself some new soap, body spray or perfume that you find most pleasing.
  • Light scented candles around the house or in one room, like the bathroom or bedroom.
  • For sensory overload, consider a weighted blanket to use. It can really calm you.
  • Try Karaoke. Sing loud and proud.
  • Walk around and touch the trees--bark, branches, leaves, fruit, flowers and/or stems.
  • Listen to calming CDs, MP3s or videos of nature sounds like rain or wind or water.
  • Go through your phone's photos and scroll through all the memories.
  • Attend a high school sporting event. Get your cheer on!
  • Get cozy in your favorite jammies, sip hot herbal tea and read a good book.
