30 Days of Self Care: Day Twenty-One

30 Days of Self Care:  Day Twenty-One

Spiritual Self Care

Spirituality is putting emphasis on the well-being of the mind, body, and spirit. It's about seeking a meaningful connection with something bigger than ourselves, which can have lasting results in positive emotions, such as peace, awe, contentment, gratitude, and acceptance.  We can connect with God, our Creator, in a deeper way when we take the needed time to pull away from our busy lives and focus on our relationship with Him.  He desires nothing more than this time with you. Building upon those moments can truly give you the respite and peace you desire.

Why is spiritual self care so important? It provides us with a renewed sense of purpose or belonging. It can give you an increased connection with your intuition. It certainly can improve your sense of peace and calmness, giving you a greater feeling of being more grounded. It can greatly grow your relationship with God and therefore, allow you to have a deeper connection with others through your spiritual relationship with Him. Remember to fill your self back up with this spiritual necessity and then you will be able to pour out to others once you refill your vessel.

Remember:  We must serve ourselves first in order to go out and better serve the world.  Fill yourself up with spiritual self care so that you are deeply connected to God and able to serve others well.

DAY TWENTY-ONE:  SPIRITUAL SELF CARE

If you have not seen the movie War Room with Priscilla Shirer, then I highly recommend it. Through the generations, many have created what is known as a prayer closet. It is a place where you go to, asking no one else to enter while you are there. It's a secret spot, an informal sacred space, where you can meet God alone. Some may scribble prayer messages along its walls. Others may have a tack board hung with ongoing messages thumbtacked for safe keeping and visible reminders of what to pray for. You may not have a closet, but rather a favorite room or chair or special spot that is your place to pray by yourself. It may not be inside, but instead outdoors. When I was growing up, I had a special large cement pipe that lay along the backside of the outdoor playground by my house. It was large enough for me to stand inside and touch the top of it. It stayed cool inside of it during the summer and often I could sit in there and reflect on what troubled me when I was a kid. God would meet me inside that pipe. And answered my prayers...
Find your space. He is ready to meet you there.

BIBLICAL VERSES FOR SPIRITUAL SELF CARE:
  • "I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.” — Psalm 4:8
  • “Submit to God and be at peace with Him; in this way prosperity will come to you. Accept instruction from His mouth and lay up His words in your heart.” — Job 22:21-22
  • “Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.” — Hebrews 12:14
  • “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7
  • "But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.--Matthew 6:6

ACTION STEPS

Here are a few ways we can cover our spiritual self care today:
  • Wake up and go to sleep with a first and last prayer.
  • Watch an online service from a church you follow.
  • Join a bible study group in person or online.
  • Do a couples study together. I suggest 40 Days in the Word by Rick Warren.
  • Find a way to help out orphans and widows.
  • Mentor another person spiritually. Sit and listen to them. Pray with them.
  • Soften your expectations of you and others. Pour out grace.
  • Turn the other cheek when you disagree with others. Respect their choices or opinions.
  • Show and conduct Random Acts of Kindness.
  • Invite someone to church and drive them and/or sit with them, especially if it's their first time.
