30 Days of Self Care: Day Twelve

30 Days of Self Care:  Day Twelve

Sensory Self Care

When we work on our Sensory Self Care we are saying to our selves that being in touch with our any of our senses is vital to our well being. Go back to Day Five to read again the description of what Sensory Self Care is and why it's so important.

We use our five senses every day, every hour, every minute, every second; and without realizing this. But when things in our life jolt us off balance and needing some time for ourselves with self care, turning to our senses is one of the best ways to quickly feel refreshed and rebounding in no time. The difference? When we use our senses in a way to allow ourselves to feel better, we focus on ways that we enjoy and navigate towards. If you need to break away from things because of sensory overload, it's clear that in that case, removal of all things that cause distraction is best. If you do not have all of your five senses, then other senses become stronger, for example, if you do not have vision, then your sense of touch or smell may be stronger. What's important is that you turn to the things that awaken your soul. Be refreshed with the senses and learn to live your best life in harmony with wonder.

Remember:  We must serve ourselves first in order to go out and better serve the world.  Take your senses to the next level by practicing sensory self care that resonates with you.  If it means unplugging and getting quiet, then do that.  If it means, navigating towards a sense that you find most relaxing, then go for it.

DAY TWELVE:  SENSORY SELF CARE

How often do you find yourself needing better direction? Whether it be with figuring out solutions to problems or which way should I turn next or how to go about my day or how to get out of this crisis, all of these situations require help. God wants to be your main source of help. He has given you the senses to use while seeking His help.  He does not want you to go it alone. He wants to be there for you, every single step you take. He watches you. He waits for you to ask Him for the best laid plans. He does not force his wisdom upon you, but considers your own free will to decide if you are ready for His guidance. No matter what happens, He is with you. His biblical instruction allows us to find answers when we think there are none. Allow God to bring you to the next step and then the next and then... remember He is the light in the darkness. He is the only way out. Be encouraged today.

BIBLICAL VERSES FOR SENSORY SELF CARE:
  • "But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear."--Matthew 13:16
  • "For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing,"--2 Corinthians 2:15
  • "So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ."--Romans 10:17
  • "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."--Psalm 119:105
  • “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!"--Matthew 6:22-23

ACTION STEPS

Here are a few ways we can cover our sensory self care today:
  • Buy a lava lamp for your room. It throws shadows on your walls with movement.
  • For sensory overload, go and lay down in a dark quiet room.
  • Listen to songs that remind you of happier times, perhaps when you grew up.
  • For sensory overload, avoid crowds by going somewhere to be alone.
  • Make yourself a fancy coffee drink or buy one where they decorate the foam.
  • Get outside and watch the clouds.
  • Watch the sun rise or set. Those few minutes can be visually peaceful.
  • Try a new food item that you have never tasted before.
  • Take a nice bath with aromatic lavender or vanilla oils for a pleasant smell.
  • String lights in an area of your home you enjoy relaxing inside or outside.
