30 days of Self Care: Day Sixteen

30 Days of Self Care:  Day Sixteen

Mental Self Care

Self-care is important to maintaining a healthy relationship with yourself. It means doing things to take care of our minds, bodies, and souls by engaging in activities that promote well-being and reduce stress. Doing so enhances our ability to live fully, vibrantly, and effectively. The practice of self-care also reminds both you and others that your needs are valid and a priority. Activities are a great way for us to distract ourselves from our current mental state until we are better able to cope. When our level of distress is too high, we may not be able to effectively handle a situation and need ways to bring our mental state down. Some suggestions may seem similar to self-care, but distraction activities serve a different purpose. One person’s self-care activity is another’s distraction technique. For some, you may want to completely unplug and do something different that does not require any kind of mental challenge.  For others, stimulating the brain by learning something new may be the exact kind of distraction needed to preserve your self care. Whichever works best for you, do it. Make the needed adjustments, then learn which of these activities will be your "go to" action steps to have in your ideas basket for mental self care.

Remember:  We must serve ourselves first in order to go out and better serve the world.  Only you can change your course by taking better care of yourself. Do it.

DAY SIXTEEN:  MENTAL SELF CARE

How many times do we try to skip out on doing things with 100% efforts? I know that if there is a work around or a short cut, we try to take it. If we find the loophole to get out of something, we will go for it. I often laugh when you see people get in the "fast pass" line at the amusement park, but still have to stand in a long line until it's their turn. Maybe you know someone and they can get you in faster or for free, without waiting your turn or having to pay. All of these things don't necessarily help you in life, in the long run.
Simply put, there are no shortcuts, no fast passes, no loopholes when it comes to earning the reward of heaven with God. Jesus explained to us in Matthew 22:37 that God doesn't want us to be halfway in a relationship with Him. He did not say, here's a shortcut or a workaround when you are investing yourself with me. He wants all of us. Every single fiber of our being to be in relationship with Him. Don't forget that he is a jealous God and does not want our attention to be swayed by the things of this world. Instead He wants our full attention and don't you think He deserves it? Apply the message today. Bring about change that increases your time with God. Replenish your hearts, souls and minds with prayer, devotion, praise, song, worship and resting in Him.

ACTION STEPS

Here are a few ways we can cover our mental self care today:
  • Change the environment and go sit in the sunshine for a few moments. Breathe in the air.
  • Intentionally schedule "me time" on your calendar or in your planner book.
  • Find a new hobby. Choose something you've always wanted to do, but haven't started yet.
  • It's been said before for other self care action ideas, buy crayons and a coloring book!
  • Create and stick to a good routine. It can be so settling when things become chaotic.
  • Listen to a podcast on an interesting topic. Learns something new.
  • Do something spontaneous or on a whim.
  • Learn the basics of a new language. Then learn more about that culture.
  • Unplug and read a magazine.
  • If you have had too much interaction for one day, call it quits and go home. Nothing wrong in cancelling plans for the evening and unwind from the day.
