The Ten Commandments: #8 You Shall Not Steal
The Ten Commandments
#8 YOU SHALL NOT STEAL.
It isn't hard to understand that if something does not belong to you, then it is not yours to take. The question begs to be asked "Why did you take that?" Was it righteous indignation, feelings of not having what is owed to you? Was it out of a momentary lapse of judgement, caught up in the moment or possibly out of some sense that you deserve it therefore you should have it? Or is it out of a sense of urgency, despair, poverty, etc. and your survival mode has been activated in that you cannot make it without what was taken? God points out many verses in His word, of reasons and ways not to steal from each other and from Him. He also states that you are to pay back with interest! You must earn what you have. In our humanness, there are many examples of stealing from one another, from the company, from the government and much more. But what strikes the biggest chord is stealing from God. In Malachi 3:8-15 the Lord reveals to us how important it is to tithe our offerings back to Him. It is a form of stealing by not tithing and contributing back to God. This means your money and your time to help the church. Let us ruminate on these words today.
VERSES
"Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need." Ephesians 4:28

" ‘Do not steal. “ ‘Do not lie. “ ‘Do not deceive one another."--Leviticus 19:11
“ ‘Do not defraud or rob your neighbor. “ ‘Do not hold back the wages of a hired worker overnight."--Leviticus 19:13
"Ill-gotten treasures have no lasting value, but righteousness delivers from death."--Proverbs 10:2

"Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor."--Romans 13:7
"The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “If anyone sins and commits a breach of faith against the Lord by deceiving his neighbor in a matter of deposit or security, or through robbery, or if he has oppressed his neighbor or has found something lost and lied about it, swearing falsely—in any of all the things that people do and sin thereby— if he has sinned and has realized his guilt and will restore what he took by robbery or what he got by oppression or the deposit that was committed to him or the lost thing that he found or anything about which he has sworn falsely, he shall restore it in full and shall add a fifth to it, and give it to him to whom it belongs on the day he realizes his guilt. ..."--Leviticus 6:1-7
"For I the Lord love justice; I hate robbery and wrong; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them."--Isaiah 61:8
"People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his appetite when he is hungry, but if he is caught, he will pay sevenfold; he will give all the goods of his house."--Proverbs 6:30-31
"Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need. I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your soil, and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear, says the Lord of hosts. Then all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a land of delight, says the Lord of hosts. ..."--Malachi 3:8-15
This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
We are better together.
